The Game Dork's Gaming Corner

Welcome to my little corner of the web!

Hello! I'm the Game Dork. I'm a fan of tabletop games. If you like tabletop games too, you've come to the right place!

What do you mean by 'tabletop games?'

That means 'games normally played around a table.' That includes board games and paper-and-pencil roleplaying games. It also includes some social games that can be played around a table, but usually are not. For example, the game Two Rooms and a Boom works best when you've got people moving back and forth between two different rooms or other discrete locations; tables often get in the way of that type of game!

But generally, that means that I'm not talking about sports or video games. I don't have a problem with either of those things; if you like them, that's awesome. They're just not what interest me, and now what I talk about here. Hopefully you'll find something here that you do enjoy!

So, you're talking about Monopoly and Dungeons and Dragons, right?

Well, yes and no. Monopoly is a board game, but it's sort of the baseline. A lot of people like that game, and I don't want to tell them that they're wrong. But in the list of 'Six Characteristics of a Good Game' that I have created, Monopoly only has one of those list items. It is my belief that board games that have been created in the last twenty-five years or so are so much better than that! Of course, not all of the games made in that time are good, but if the term 'board games' makes you think of Monopoly or Sorry! instead of Catan or Betrayal at House on the Hill, then you are missing out on a lot of really fun games. Sure, I talk about games like Monopoly a little but, but I mostly focus on the modern hobby.

And by the same token, Dungeons and Dragons is a roleplaying game, but it's far from the only one. I'm certainly not going to disparage the trusty old D&D, but there are so many other wonderful roleplaying games out there that I think need to be better known that I spend a lot of time talking about games that aren't Dungeons and Dragons.

Ok, cool. What do you do on this website?

Mostly, I write weekly blog entries. These include board game reviews, discussions of roleplaying games, analyses of trends in the gaming industry, and the like. Some of these are repostings of articles I wrote for the (now-defunct) gaming blog called PinkFae. I didn't want those articles to be lost, so I'm posting them again here for posterity's sake.

I also have a 'GM for Hire' service. You can hire me to run a roleplaying game for you.

Additionally, I am a firm believer in inclusiveness. It is my fervent opinion that all human beings, so long as they treat other humans (and animals, too, honestly) with dignity and respect, they are worthy of dignity and respect in turn. So many of my articles have an undertone (or sometimes an outright major theme) of inclusion, regardless of ethnicity, gender identity, sexuality, physical or mental health, nationality, religion, or any other factor. All humans deserve to be accepted, and games are (in my opinion) an integral part and essential path to fostering inclusion.
